Where in the World are your Bonanno's?

The Bahamas
Hi Vivian and Domenick from the Bahamas! We stayed at the Sandals Resort for our honeymoon. I had my Bonanno bag, monogrammed with my new initails, with me the whole time. It's hard to see with all the shadows, but it's in Sable with Arbutus. Love it!

Meet Our Newest Employee

Ashley came on board last week and we're excited to have her. She is studying Radiology locally at Keiser University in Port St. Lucie. Her favorite things to do are shopping, going to the beach and dinner out with her boyfriend Marc. As a matter of fact, she was out shopping in Downtown Stuart with her boyfriend recently, happened into our shop, and asked if we were hiring. Ashley took an application home with her and really impressed us during her interview with her "Bonanno" knowledge, and her sweet personality was the clincher. Next time you're in town, come on in and say hello to Ashley.

A Message From My "Other" Brother

My brother David & sister in-law Su

Hey big sister, I must say, without bias, your blog is becoming a wonderful source of entertainment for me. You offer historical information about Dad's sandals; rich with detail and as far as I'm concerned, completely accurate.

It's really nice to see customers come into your boutique showing off their Bonanno's or sending you funny stories relating to the sandals. Good stuff!

Furthermore, the images and text you receive from globe trotters solidifies Dad's hard work and dream of making a fine sandal that would stand the test of time and fashion.

It seems like just yesterday, under the glow of the dining room light, Dad and Mom would make one sandal at a time. His heavily calloused hands would cut the leather with precision like Michelangelo chipped away at David. It's an artistic skill that maintains a steady heartbeat today, thanks to Steve, Monica and the both of you.

Keep up the good work and keep posting images of your great customers.

Your loving little big bro Dave

The Originals

The lovely Dale Lovette popped in today, and to my delight was wearing an original pair of Bonanno's made by Mr. Luigi and my Dad, back some 35 years ago. They're still in pretty good shape. She says she can't part with them to be resoled, they're her favorites among the many she still has in her closet. Too Cool!

Notice there isn't a name stamped inside the sandal.
Back then, every part was literally hand punched and hand cut, even the soles were hand drawn around the foot. In fact, Dale shared that when she first started noticing the sandals with the JR stamp inside, even back then, she (and her friends) knew first hand Jack's were the knock-offs.

Thank you Dale for sharing your treasured Bonanno's with us.

Domenick and I went to see our brother in-law, Tony Trischka, who was in town with his Bluegrass band. They had a gig at the Bamboo Room in Lake Worth. So ... I just had to get a "Where in the World are Your Bonanno's" pic in.

The show was fantastic, we had a great time with family and friends that came out to see them. They played the next night in Hollywood Florida, then stayed at our place in Stuart. Thank you to our out of town friend Serge, who helped us accommodate a five piece band and their equipment by letting us bunk a couple of guys at his place too. The next day they were off to a gig in Tampa.

The Flip Flop File (Your Bonanno Stories)

Got a touching or funny story to share or just a great experience related to your Bonanno's? Send it along to vivianb@stephenbonanno.com Please include your first name, city and state. We welcome your photos.

Hi Vivian & Domenick,
My husband & I were in your new shop this morning picking up another sandal order. Please know we enjoyed our visit with you two regarding our dogs and our recent loss. You two were so sweet to share your time with us. It meant so much. Later today I remembered something that happened not long ago I thought you two might enjoy.....

Our Blk Std Dachshund, Chance, had the crazy habit of licking the inside of my husbands shoes. One day I had left my Bonanno's out and later found him licking the inside of them. I screamed for my husband that he was actually licking my Bonanno's. Being the neatnick that I am, I was in total shock!

At that my husband yelled back, "What can I tell you, he has GOOD TASTE!!!"

Now that I miss him so, I'm happy he got to lick those beautiful sandals and smell that great leather. Thanks again for our visit this morning and letting me give your sweet Rippy a little kiss! P.S. The color was perfect!

Hollywood California

This weekend our Bonanno’s got a trip to California. The Bonanno’s took in a little shopping in Pasadena and Beverly Hills before heading to the Hollywood Bowl to see John Williams conduct the LA Phil. Too bad the man in front would not move out of the way – he just did not get why we wanted to take a picture of our sandals and the bowl.

Essentially Palm Beach

I started thumbing through some books my brother loaned me ages ago. I've always loved looking through Lilly's guide to entertaining books ... they're just so pretty to look at.

Check this out, an autographed copy from Lilly herself to Monica and Stevie

A couple of photos of models wearing Bonanno's

Palm Beach Then and Now

Loved looking through this book. Came across some really great historic photos of landmarks on the Island of Palm Beach and some very young pictures of Lilly Pulitzer to boot ...

Below, a fashion shoot and check out the inset. What says Palm Beach better than Lilly Pulitzer fashion and Bonanno Sandals ...

What a neat discovery to find a photo of my brother stitching sandals. The caption and the story aren't exactly correct, but I'm used to it. Mr. Luigi isn't our uncle. He was my father's sandal making partner. (click on images to read captions)

We're Finally in Our New Store ...

This morning we opened our doors and received well wishes from our business neighbors. Along with an inspiring card from Sharon and Rich from Humble Heart, Beth and Marlene from Osceola Street Cafe brought over a basket of fresh baked cookies, yummy. I think I might have eaten half the tray. :-
Josephine from Aunt Ds Gourmet brought a fabulous jar of pink, green and white gumballs, Paul and Linda from the Flagler Grill brought over a bottle of Chandon, a California Brut, Tanya from Puppuccino's Pet Boutique brought over a super cute dog bowl filled with doggie cookies and Rippy's favorite, "the stick". Kelly our first and very missed employee brought Rippy a purple flip flop collar. Just adorable.
"Karma" Mary saged our store for good karma, Joanie from The Love Garden, Frank and Jan from Coconut Bay, Lisa from Pelicans and Periwinkles Pam from the Stuart News, and friend Linda and of course Stephen, Monica. Bailey and Anthony Bonanno joined the celebration. Serge our neighbor with his special gal pal, Sandra, gave us a bottle of Dom with a couple of beautiful glasses.
We are truly blessed to have such special people in our lives.

Our first customer in our new location was Kristina from Thurmont MD who found us through MC Morris blog. This was her first visit to Florida and said she had to find us. She ordered her first pair of monogram Bonanno's!
When Domenick and I knew we were moving I started to sketch some ideas on paper as to what I wanted for our new location.
I called in Deirdre Fawcett Peters owner of Portobello Road, Interiors and Antiques in Deephaven MN 952-380-0181, who is a customer of ours. I asked if she would look over what I sketched and help me pull it all together. Between her fabulous ideas, Domenick's tweaking, we came up with this ...
The store front was Realty Unlimited and the room you see was the main office. We removed the walls, added dressing rooms ...

I love the way this room came out. We will add fabric on either side of the dressing room walls to frame the space and I plan to put a big black and white photo of Jackie Kennedy wearing my Dad's sandals. Too cool!
Below is the larger part of the room. We removed the island and added our counter space.

Below is another shot of the retail space. We have lots of windows in the front of the store as well as the back. It just feels very cheery inside, especially with the fun green we picked for the walls. Check out the detailed pic of our monogrammed seat cushions. You might have to click on the image to get a closer look.
Love, Love, love them!

Chalk one up for the Good Guys!!

My heart is racing and my hands are still shaking ...

Yesterday: A very sweet and unassuming gentleman came into our boutique and spent approx. $200 on Vineyard Vines for himself and his wife.

2 hours later he was back purchasing the very same things, FOR THE SECOND TIME! Apparently after leaving our store he put the bag in his car and thought he locked the doors. Not that Stuart is a bad or dangerous town by any means, it's quite the contrary. Our town is so Mayberry like that Domenick swears Opie and Sheriff Taylor will be walking by any minute.

Still, in my opinion, you should ALWAYS lock up your car!

So when Mr Sweet and unassuming returned to his car, his golf clubs and cell phone were still there, thank goodness, but no "Stephen Bonanno Sandals' shopping bag.

He asked that we call him if anyone should try to return the items, and said he was going to file a report with the police ...

After we closed for the day Domenick and I discussed if someone were to come in with the stolen merchandise, how would be handle it. We gave ourselves a CODE WORD which would mean to call the police. .. and that was the end of that.

Today, we were busy as usual with walk in customers, shipping and web orders when I heard a woman come in expressing she would like to return the items her boyfriend bought for her, but she doesn't want store credit because she doesn't wear these kinds of clothes. she starts going on and on "I mean, look at me, I wear black biker clothes ..." Domenick is explaining store policy when I suddenly hear the "CODE WORD."

I think I say very calmly to Domenick, "you'll need to fill out a Return slip," which was also part of our plan. So he's writing very slowly, and very detailed and I'm in the back on the phone with the police. My heart is racing, I couldn't breathe, I'm whispering into the phone trying to explain to the police what went down yesterday and what was happening right now.

While on the phone, they asked that we detain the woman for as long as possible and for me to stay on the phone with them. So I went to the front and started talking to the woman with the phone at my ear. While I talked, the officer in my ear was telling me the Police were out front our of store waiting for backup.

They finally walked in and after about an hour of questioning they handcuffed her. A stunned Mr Sweet and unassuming came in (I called him as soon as I hung up with the police) to claim his merchandise. And it was off to the lock-up for Miss "I don't wear Preppy clothes".

Domenick and I high fived, settled our nerves with a glass of Chardonnay and went on with the rest of a very busy day.

Sunday, June 03, 2007

SO YOU'VE HEARD BY NOW ... WE'RE MOVING!

NO. We're not closing our doors, and NO, we're not leaving Stuart! We're just moving around the corner.

Domenick and I have had our eyes peeled for anything that might open up on Osceola Street, since we opened our boutique on Flagler Ave., 4 years ago.

We love our current location, but we've learned very quickly that most people treat Flagler Ave like a back street. Here's the reason, Since so many shops go through from Osceola St. to Flagler Ave. shoppers assume, for good reason, once they've seen it on Osceola St, there's no reason to walk around to Flagler Ave. What they don't realize is there is a handful of really cute and unique shops that sit only on Flagler Ave. such as:

Puppuccio Pet Boutique, where you can get the cutest pet accessories for your pampered pooch.
Aunt D's Gourmet has the best coffee in town not to mention, really great gourmet foods and gift items.
Luna's Pizza where you can get the best garlic knots
High Heeled Boutique who has beautiful shoes and handbags.
and then there is us ... So anyway, 2 months ago a friend of ours contacted Domenick and told him about a space opening up on Osceola. We went to take a look ...

The new digs is about 100 Sq Ft bigger than what we have now, but on Osceola Street the foot traffic quadruples, so needless to say, we jumped on it.

OUR NEW DIGS:
We're going to be in the Real Estate office right next to Duffy's Sports Bar @
3 SW Osceola Street
Stuart, Florida 34994

We'll be giving Stephen Bonanno Sandals a face-lift:
** New interior colors with the guidance of Dee Dee Peters, interior designer.
** We'll be changing up the colors of the boutique logo.
** We'll have much better lighting!!!
** We're adding more phone lines! (same numbers)
** We'll be adding an interactive computer in the front of the store so you can play with colors to help you visualize what your sandals will look like.
** We've already added a new web address so it's easier to remember www.sbsandals.com
** We're adding a TV monitor in the front of our store window so people can watch a slide show of how our sandals are made. I thought it would intersting.
** Oh yeah, and the coolest change is, Domenick and I will have a real office. Currently we've stuffed two desks back in the stock area. What you see is Domenick's desk in the foreground and my mess in the back.

As we make the changes I'll keep you posted with pics.
SO STAY TUNED!!!

People say the Strangest Things

Amy, a new customer from Minnesota decked in Lilly and looking adorable, stopped in our Stuart boutique Saturday to check out our sandals. She's looking at all the styles while talking with Domenick, I'm sitting with her friend Dee Dee chatting about our new space when I hear Domenick burst out, "Viv, you've gotta hear this one" ...

Hold onto your seats folks, here is another totally ridiculous story that Amy heard from a boutique owner in Minnesota who sells Jacks.

"Jack Rogers and Benny Bonanno were gay lovers, they had a falling out, and went their separate ways with the sandals."

Yikes! Who thinks up these stories?!

WHERE IT ALL STARTED

Happy Mother's Day Mom,
from me and Domenick, Stephen and Monica, Tracey and Fred, David and Su and all your grandchildren, great grandchildren and Rippy too.
XXOO, we love you.

In honor of Mother's day and upcoming Father's Day, I thought it would be nice to show the shop where I grew up, my first job as cashier and duster, and most important, where it all started with Bonanno sandals.

Below is a photo which ran in the local newspaper, The Palm Beach Post, taken of my Mom gluing the soles of the sandals before my Dad would stitch, sand and stain them. I wish I had a photo of her whipstitching the sandals or hand punching the patterns. It was such a cool process to watch, but I can't find a thing.

Below, is my Dad and Stephen, age 16, at "Dixie Shoe Repair" on Dixie Hwy. W. Palm Beach and if you look really close, you'll see in the right hand corner of the photo, a painted sign and the actual Navajo sandals my Dad made and set on his counter for his customers to order, one pair at a time. He never thought to mass market his sandals. And I think by now you all know the rest of the story.

Oh the memories ... Dad would have bins stacked floor to ceiling with ladies heels in all shapes colors and styles. I would pull out a handful of heels and spend my weekends playing house. Heels were my dolls in the shop. The high spiked heels were the sophisticated ladies, the thick stacked heels were the Mothers and the kitten heels were the young Barbi types. I played for hours.
Quite an imagination ;)

BONANNO'S vs JACKS

A lot of people often wonder what the differences are between the Bonanno's and Jack's, so I've put together a list. I hope this helps:
Bonanno: The Original.
My father made them back in the 60's with Mr.. Luigi Pucillo, his partner. My mother cut out the leather into patterns, the long thin strips for the whipstitch as well as punched every single hole by hand. She put together all the tops of the sandals chose the colors she thought would show nice on her counter, while my father glued, stitched and sanded the soles. The Bonanno name was never stamped into the sole until my brother took over the business in the 1980s.
Jack: Imitation.
They saw a good thing, copied and mass produced them and sold them in dept stores. There is no patent on a shoe so more power to them.

Bonanno: My brother continues the tradition ... every single pair is hand-crafted in W. Palm Beach Florida USA!
Jack: I've heard parts are shipped from overseas and assembled in Miami.

Bonanno: True B width, and true half sizes.
Jack: Run narrow, do not have true half sizes. Their half sizes are really whole sizes with wider tops.

Bonanno: 100% leather
Jack: Part leather part synthetic man made materials.
Customers come into our boutique with Jacks in hand and show us the underside where it has cracked and wonder why. That's VINYL folks!

Bonanno: We use the finest kid skin leather for the uppers. The leather is dyed.
Jack: They use calf skin for their uppers. Their leather is painted.

Bonanno: Approx. 75 colors and over 5000 combos. to choose from.
Jack: Limited selection.

Bonanno: Customize your colors.
Jack: From what I've heard, you can't.

Bonanno: Custom fitting.
Jack: As far as I know, they do not.

Bonanno: Repair dept. on site in W. Palm Beach. Resole when sandals are worn out.
Jack: As far as I know, there is no one at the company you can call for repairs, forget about resoles.

Bonanno: Very comfortable.
Jack: I have heard time and time again Jacks are uncomfortable, but I've never worn them, for obvious reasons.

Bonanno: The classic was originally known as the "Navajo", but when my brother took over the business he renamed them the "Palm Beach" classic with Jackie Kennedy in mind.
Jack: Still refers to them as the Navajos but lately I've noticed on some of the sites selling JRs, they're calling them "Palm Beach." What a surprise!

Bonanno: We pride ourselves with excellent customer service. You have a problem, you talk directly to me or Rick at the factory.
Jack: I wouldn't know, but I'd be curious if you have any stories to share.

Ridiculous Stories I've heard along the way:
Jack Rogers and my dad Benny Bonanno are brothers or cousins who had a falling out and went their separate ways with the sandals.
To set the record straight:
Jack is not my uncle or my cousin. I've never met the man.

Ridiculous Stories I've heard along the way:
Jacqueline Kennedy wore only Jacks.
To set the record straight:
I'm sure she was forced to ... in a pinch. ;-)

Ridiculous Stories I've heard along the way:
It was the Jack Rogers sandals that made Oprah's top 10 O list back in 2002.
To set the record straight:
Hell no. They are Bonanno's and now her producers are ordering our sandals too!

Ridiculous Stories I've heard along the way:
Lilly Pulitzer and her daughters are wearing Jack Rogers sandals in Quest Magazine January issue 2007.
To set the record straight:
Don't even get me going ... No, they are not Jacks. The photo editor admitted later she just assumed this and went with it. March has the mini retraction if you care to check it out.
P.S. Lilly and her daughters go directly to the factory to get their sandals.
